French Expression - couper la poire en deux

 

If you were to translate this literally,  it translates to cut the pear in two.

When haggling over prices with the French, this is a good expression to know. 

I will give you an example. You ask the price of  an item at an Antiques market, the seller  replies 200 euros. You offer 150 euros. 

The seller replies couper la poire and makes a counter offer of 175 euros.

It basically means to share equally, to meet in the middle.

A charming and useful expression and one that no doubt the French I will be using today when I start negotiating...
