French food Friday...Croque Monsieur Bake

recipe and photo from here

When I say this recipe, I knew that it was perfect for a rainy week-end in SW France.

Ingredients

  • 6 slices ready-sliced multigrain brown bread
  • 75 grams Dijon mustard
  • 6 slices Gruyere cheese
  • 3 slices ham
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Maldon salt (or ½ teaspoon table salt)
  • 80 ml full fat milk
  • 4 tablespoons grated Gruyere cheese (or emmental or cheddar)
  • 1 good sprinkling of Worcestershire sauce

très bon vendredi à tous, Leeann x

  1. What memories you brought back!
Croque Monsieur used to be served in many Greek cafes, I haven't seen it for ages, I wonder why that is?
There was also a Croque Madame,I don't remember what the difference is, one of them, the best in my opinion, had a bechamel topping.

    1. Hi Susan, A croque madame is the same as a croque monsieur but is topped with a fried egg. Ironically French Boyfriend had never tried a croque madame before I came on the scene :-)
So yummy and much nicer than an ordinary cheese and ham toasted sandwich.

      amicalement, Leeann x
