Lavage et repassage......

{Lavage de cerveau =Brain wash}

The vide grenier/brocante season has started in earnest which means that most weekends there are many of these taking place and it is a matter of making a decision as to whether or not it will be a good one based on previous experiences.

As you already know vide grenier translates to empty attic and in the past it has been sellers selling off items that have been sitting around the house, often in the attic gathering dust.

Nowdays you tend to get a lot of brocanteurs who are professional dealers selling their often over priced wares and this does take the edge of the vide grenier.

The main difference between a vide grenier and a brocante is that you must be a licensed brocanteur to sell at a brocante.

Early on Sunday morning we went to a vide grenier 5kms from our house. It was fabulous looking at all the interesting items on offer and I have to say that it was a real one with only a couple of professional dealers.

Along with a few other items, I found some fabulous table cloths and napkins so spent a lot of yesterday washing and ironing gorgeous linen.

{One of my finds, it has a fabulous monogramme complete with petit flowers in the centre}

Although I find ironing sheets a little tedious at times, I enjoy ironing and folding anique linen.

I use eau de linge (ironing water) which is made from white flowers and it makes the house smell divine.

What about you? Do you also use ironing water and do you have any ironing secrets that you would like to share?

I am now off to photograph my precious ironed and washed objects of desire and then find a place for it in my shop downstairs......

A bientot,

L x

p.s. I loved the photo as it seems relevant at present :-)

  1. I try to do all of my ironing once a week on a Sunday evening. I set the ironing board up in front of the TV and pour myself a nice big glass of wine to enjoy while I iron. It makes ironing more enjoyable for sure! xx

  4. I love to iron my old linen too, and always iron when the linen is still very wet, that way all wrinkles are ironed away.

  6. Fabulous photo, Leeann. That's just how I feel when I do the washing !! BORING !!
Lovely that you found some good things to buy.
I use either Lavender or Rose linen water when I iron. Makes everything smell divine, including the house. XXXX

  7. The photo is a crack up and I'm not big on ironing - antique linen or nto;-) ALthough I only use antique linen so I'd better learn to START liking ironing. We have a HUUUUGE vide grenier here in St Paul on May 1st and I'm always there really early to get lots of wonderful goodies as the people in the village seem to have an endless supply of stuff in their attics. Last year I found my antique angel's wing...
    Bisous to you Budgie

  8. My motto is life is too short to iron sheets! The pressed table linen is lovely though.

  10. I always went to work so I could have someone clean my house and do my ironing!!!! Now everything gets sprayed with Durance eau de linge so I at last have a pretty perfume while I do this odious job!!!!! Love that shot.

  11. That first photo is fabulous! I do love to iron and I use spray starch in my linen and cotton. Luckily the humidity in Houston is such that ironing isn't always necessary.
    Your tablecloth is beautiful!

  13. Ok...I will let you in on a secret since you mention it...
but first, I love your finds and love, love, love the top photo.
Life is bliss when you can iron it all..tea towels, aprons, table cloths, sheets etc...whether you do it or someone else does it for you, there is nothing better in my books. All done with a hint of lemon or lavender water....just lovely!

  14. YOU IRON SHEETS? Honestly?
I do iron and I think it makes all things look better and more beautiful but...., SHEETS? Really?

  15. Everything I iron I do on my bed. Even though we do have an ironing board, I still prefer the bed for its size. And it is perfect to iron large table cloths! What do you think?

  16. Hi Leeann,

I love to iron too, especially when I am watching TV in the evening.
I use a beautiful Eau de Linge Perfumee Lavande, that is made in France (savonbormes) and I find mixing this with water, that I put in the steam iron, helps to make ironing easier.
Your linen sounds lovely with the monogram and flowers.

    Hugs

  17. Hello
Oh your wonderful linens sound wonderful and I love ironing also but rarely do it anymore. I am at the shop too long and 6 days a week. I have one day to do laundry and I just fold out of the dryer so I can relate to the picture..ha
I do use ironing water at the shop and love it
    Blessings have a good day

  18. One of my favorite linen waters to iron with is something I found years ago in a beautiful shaped bottle with a simple label that reads: Paris Home. It's probably something from a dept store here in the states, but I love the scent and love to use it to iron anything. I made up some lavender and lemon balm scented water by steeping fresh cuttings to replace what was in the original bottle. Like you, I just love how the scent fills up the place. Your find with the lovely monogram and flowers sounds so lovely! ~Lili

  19. Oh, I've never used ironing water - but it sounds divine. Now I'm wondering whether to go and try to find some or if I should make my own. Thanks for sharing.
